Providing a ray of hope to cancer patients.

About Us

The Avery Foundation was founded in 2017 to honor Jim and Julie Avery, who lost their battle to cancer. This foundation was created because the Avery family knows firsthand what a toll cancer can take on those battling but also on the family members surrounding them.

The Avery Foundation helps patients and their families with unexpected expenses of travel, meals, and lodging during their treatments. For example: If your physician refers you to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota we would help pay for fuel, meals while there, and your lodging. Receipts must be kept for meals and lodging and sent in with the Grant Application. These expenses add undue stress to an already stressful time for you. That is why we are here. To relieve some of that stress and let you concentrate all your bodily resources on the battle at hand.

In loving memory

This Foundation was established to honor the memories of siblings James and Julie Avery. James was born on April 4, 1956, to Harvey and Mary Avery of Dubuque. In January 2014, he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. The cancer had already spread to his rectum, liver, and bones at the time of his diagnosis. Jim battled the disease with great courage and determination until he passed away on December 5, 2015. Julie was born on June 9, 1961, to Harvey and Mary Avery. She was diagnosed with fibrosis sarcoma in June of 1981 and treatment required the amputation of one of her legs. She battled cancer with grace and concern for her family until August 27, 1982, when she passed away peacefully. The Foundation honors their memories by helping other cancer patients in need.
